Municipal Colau and the socialists veto a sculpture of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in Barcelona
First it was Don Quixote and now Copito de Nieve.
The government team of the Barcelona City Council continues with its veto of figures linked to the city.
The latest has been the refusal to pay homage to Copito de Nieve, the only albino primate who arrived in Barcelona in 1967 and lived in the Zoo until his death for almost 40 years.
Some 37,000 signatures supported the proposal made on the Change.org platform in which you can read: «We have many streets and statues of generals, wars, politicians... And why not one of Copito de Nieve, the albino gorilla that moved generations of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s...?"
That is why they asked for a tribute to the gorilla in the city and even a technology company went further and proposed to the City Council to create a robotic figure of Snowflake about 30 meters high to install it in the Zoo as a claim.
However, the Consistory considers that it is not viable but for ideological reasons: "Although the figure of Copito may be friendly and arouse our empathy, deep down it was the result of colonialism in Equatorial Guinea," says the letter they have received. the representatives of the company and that advanced Rac1.
The Public Art Advisory Council was in charge of assessing the proposal and they detail that a tribute to the gorilla "would not have to hide the contradictions that the figure of Copito incorporates: at the same time a vestige of a colonial system that we reject but linked to sentimental memory of many Barcelonans".
Despite not wanting to make the robotic statue, with a cost of more than 1.5 million for the public coffers, the Consistory is still thinking about a recognition for Copito but free of ideological meaning, which will require time.
The political storm after the rejection of this statue was immediate.
The PP councilor, Óscar Ramírez, assured that his party requested "the appearance in commission of the person in charge of the Colau government who has denied recognition to Copito de Nieve for Barcelona."
