The courage of four garbage collectors from Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (Val-de-Marne) was honored on Tuesday during a ceremony organized in Joinville-le-Pont (Val-de-Marne).

On February 17, they rushed into a burning building and saved residents.

“You are heroes

,

” said a fire captain, quoted by

Le Parisien

.

As they started their rounds, the four garbage collectors heard a suspicious noise, caused by the explosion of a scooter battery.

Flames appeared very quickly on the first floor of a building.

One of the rippers, 39, had rescued a partially burned man and his baby while his colleagues cared for other residents.

Heroism and return to work

A neighbor had opened the hall of her building to welcome the victims.

The garbage collectors had resumed their rounds after the arrival of the firefighters.

To thank them, the Est Marne & Bois territory offered the heroes an all-expenses-paid stay.

Two victims are still in hospital.
