With nearly 300 million French speakers in the world, French currently ranks fifth among the most used languages.

The ranking is dominated by English, Mandarin and Spanish.

Towards three times more French speakers?

This upheaval would be caused essentially by a demographic evolution on the African continent.

According to INED estimates, Africa will become the most populous continent in the world within thirty years with more than 2.5 billion inhabitants.

French being spoken in more than 30 African countries, our language should therefore become one of the most spoken and learned in the world.

Moreover, the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) estimates that the number of French speakers will triple in thirty years.

French is therefore spoken by 8% of the world's population compared to 3% today.

And nearly 85% of French speakers would be African in 2050. The OIF adds that French is the second most learned language in the world and the second language most used in international organizations and the media.

It is also the third language used in the business world and the fourth language on the Internet.
