On Monday evening, the Swedish Maritime Administration met with representatives of the Swedish Boating Union, the Swedish Cruiser Club and the Swedish Sailing Association to discuss a collaboration that will lead to better charts for recreational boating.

- We all completely agree to work together to increase the quality of the charts and simply investigate the shortcomings that different people in the country say they have found in our charts, says the Swedish Maritime Administration's director general Katarina Norén.

The Swedish Maritime Administration has recently updated its charts, but the results have been criticized.

Among other things, since many previously navigable waters have been marked as much shallower.

At the same time, the charts are said to show grains that do not exist in reality - and lack markings for real grounds.

Precautionary principle

According to Katarina Norén, the fact that water is marked as shallower is usually due to a precautionary principle.

There is simply a lack of reliable data on water depth in many places.

The Swedish Maritime Administration has therefore submitted a request to the government for financing new sea measurements of shallow water.
