London avoided the worst.

More than 125 firefighters fought Monday for three hours a fire that broke out in a 21-storey tower in the center of the British capital, near the business district of the City.

Twenty fire trucks were deployed to the scene at 4 p.m.

The fire was under control shortly after 7 p.m.

About 60 people evacuated the building, which includes apartments and offices, after the outbreak of the fire on the 17th floor, which then spread to the balconies of the 18th and 19th floors.

Causes still unknown

Firefighters received more than fifty calls immediately after the blaze broke out, according to Commander Chris Jenner of the London Fire Department.

“The professionalism, (…) and the speed of the control officers and the firefighters made it possible to limit the material damage and to avoid human damage”, he declared.

A 64 meter ladder was deployed to douse the fire from outside the building.

The causes of the fire were not immediately known.
