From April 1st, the municipal museums in Frankfurt will limit their opening hours.

The Institute for City History is also affected.

All houses cut by up to nine hours, which corresponds to an additional day of closure.

Each museum has decided when to close, depending on the flow of visitors and staff.

For example, the Historical Museum or the Jewish Museum cut off the off-peak times and open less late, others, such as the Archaeological Museum or Caricatura, close another day, in this case Tuesday.

The annual savings should amount to 750,000 euros, but visits by school classes should continue to be possible during the closing times.

The non-municipal museums, such as the Städel or the Film Museum, are not affected; the Museum for Communication is currently even extending its opening hours.

It was "a very painful step, but I feel compelled to take it," said Ina Hartwig (SPD), head of the culture and science department.

This is a temporary measure that can be reversed at any time.

But since the city has to save and culture has to make its contribution, the measure is necessary.

For culture, this is “particularly frustrating because the directors, like all other cultural workers, managed well during the pandemic and responded to the crisis with creative concepts.” Now it is important to protect the cultural infrastructure.

"The measure is a contribution from culture to save costs and help to consolidate the budget."
