Former leader of the far-right Proud Boys group, Henry "Enrique" Tarrio, has been arrested and charged by the US judiciary in the attack on the US Capitol.

He is accused, among other things, of having operated a "conspiracy" to prevent the certification of the results of the presidential election by Congress.

He is also charged with disrupting an official process, damaging government property and obstructing security forces, the US Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old Tarrio was arrested in his home state of Florida and will appear before a magistrate on Tuesday (local time), the ministry said.

"Guided, mobilized and led"

In addition to Tarrio, five other members of the "Proud Boys" who had previously been arrested in connection with the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 have now been charged.

The accused were all members of a sub-organization founded by Tarrio in December 2020, the "Ministry of Self-Defense".

"On Jan. 6, the defendants directed, mobilized, and led members of the crowd to get onto Capitol grounds and into the Capitol, resulting in the tearing down of metal barriers, property damage, and attacks on security forces," the Justice Department said.

Tarrio is not accused of having personally participated in the storming.

However, he is said to have led the planning in advance and also to have been in contact with members of the "Proud Boys" (in German: "Proud Boys") during the storming.

Tarrio had been temporarily arrested two days before the attack on another matter.

At the time, the magistrate ordered him to leave the capital, Washington.

Tarrio was sentenced to around five months in prison last year for criminal damage and possession of gun accessories.

After an inciting speech by the ousted Republican President Donald Trump, his supporters stormed the seat of Congress in Washington on January 6, 2021.

They wanted to prevent the confirmation of the election victory of the Democrat Joe Biden.

The attack killed five people and injured dozens.

The attack on the heart of US democracy shook the country.
