5,000 civilians were evacuated through humanitarian channels in the Sumi region of northeastern Ukraine.

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Irina Bereshuk said in a TV briefing that 5,000 people had been evacuated through the Sumi-Poltava humanitarian route.

The evacuation of Sumi residents is the first instance of evacuation through the humanitarian channel after the Russian invasion.

An earlier attempt to evacuate civilians through the humanitarian route was pursued, but failed as the attack resumed.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has also confirmed the operation of the humanitarian corridor in the Sumi area.

The Russian military said it would open humanitarian channels in five cities: Kiiu (Kyiv), Chernihyu, Sumi, Kharkiv (Kharkov) and Mariupol, but it is believed that only one humanitarian channel was operated in Sumi.

Russian military claims Ukrainian officials are preventing the evacuation of civilians.
