• Courts The Prosecutor's Office requests imprisonment for two mayors of Pineda de Mar for coercing a hotelier to expel policemen after 1-O

One of the most controversial consequences after the votes for the independence referendum on 1-O and the police operation to prevent them will be judged by a court.

The Criminal Court of Arenys de Mar has accepted the request of the Prosecutor's Office and considers that the trial against Jordi Masnou, second deputy mayor and coordinator of large projects of the Pineda de Mar City Council, the former councilor Carmen Aragonés, both of the PSC, and the head of the Local Police of this Maresme town must be held at the Barcelona Court.

The three face three years in prison and disqualification from holding public office or employment for allegedly coercing a hotel manager to expel some 500 National Police officers who were staying during the referendum operation from two hotels in Pineda. of 1-O between September and November 2017. The intention was to expel them from the municipality for participating in charges against some voters during the vote to enter and take ballot boxes from schools.

The Prosecutor's Office considers that on October 2, 2017, after a pro-independence demonstration against the agents at the door of the hotel establishments in which they were staying, the defendants allegedly pressured the manager of the chain to expel the police.

The Public Ministry even remarks that the accused deputy mayor urged the hotel manager to fire the police officers "yes or yes", despite having a reservation until October 5, and that if he did not do so, he was going to close the hotel " the next day" and was to be "closed for five years.

The agents left the hotel on October 3 and were relocated to other facilities, mostly on a ship docked in the port of Barcelona.

The trial was to be held in Arenys this Monday but it has been suspended since one of the defendants has been head of the local police since 2008, and the regulations establish that those responsible for the police must be tried at the Barcelona Court.
