In cities such as London and New York, Russian oligarchs have for decades made large investments in real estate and companies.

But their money has also ended up in Sundsvall.

Behind Sweden's only manufacturer of so-called primary aluminum, Kubal in Sundsvall, is an international group controlled by three of the world's richest men.

Putin's favorite industrialist

The largest owner of Kubal's parent company EN + is the aluminum giant's founder Oleg Deripaska.

He has been called Putin's favorite industrialist and is described as one of the two, three oligarchs that Putin regularly addresses.

Deripaska has a Russian diplomatic passport and Cypriot citizenship, which he according to leaked documents bought in 2017. According to the US Treasury Department, he has appeared in investigations into money laundering, bribery and organized crime.

His visible fortune today is around SEK 30 billion.

Four years ago, he and his company ended up on the US sanctions list, but he managed to get the aluminum group eliminated after he reduced his ownership to less than 50 percent.

A spokesman for Oleg Deripaska commented on the 2019 sanctions by saying that they are based on "dirty lies" and that Deripaska has come across its assets completely "legitimately and legally".

Aluminum baron

The aluminum factory in Sundsvall, which is one of the region's largest employers, has two more oligarchs as major players.

Behind a company registered in the Bahamas are Vladimir Putin's close friend Viktor Vekselberg and his partner Leonard Blavatnink.

Vekselberg is called the aluminum baron and he has the world's largest collection of Farber eggs.

He has previously been a partner in the scandal-ridden Bank of Cyprus and his fortune is estimated at around SEK 80 billion.

The third major owner is Leonard Blavatnik.

A large part of his fortune of over 300 billion was founded in parallel when Putin's power was strengthened.

In recent years, he has officially tried to distance himself from Putin.

In 2017, he was knighted by the British Queen.
