Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian told his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Monday that Tehran's relations with any country, including Russia, should not be affected by sanctions.

The Foreign Ministry stated that the minister told Lavrov in a telephone conversation, "We are against both war and sanctions. Iran's relations with all countries, including Russia, should not be affected by sanctions."

She added that Lavrov also supported Iran's "logical demands" in talks between Tehran and world powers in Vienna aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, from which the United States withdrew after three years.

The phone call came after Russia asked the United States to provide guarantees that sanctions imposed over its invasion of Ukraine would not harm its trade with Tehran.

Moscow put these obstacles in place, at a time when it seemed that the indirect talks between Tehran and Washington in Vienna were heading towards an agreement.

Yesterday, the Russian Foreign Minister said that Western sanctions on his country have become a stumbling block to reviving the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and international powers.

And his US counterpart, Anthony Blinken, sought to dispel talk of such obstacles, when he said that the sanctions imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine had nothing to do with a possible nuclear deal with Iran.

In a related context, the official Iranian news agency "IRNA" reported today that chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani will return to the country today for consultations.

"Baqeri will return tonight to Tehran for the usual consultations. The meetings of experts will continue in Vienna," she added.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington have entered their final stage, and European leaks suggest that a new settlement will be reached that restores the nuclear agreement.
