The US aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman is staying in the northern Aegean Sea this week in preparation for a flight operation following the worsening Russian invasion of Ukraine, CNN reported on the 5th, citing a US official.

The official did not disclose the exact location of the Truman, but she said it was unusual for a carrier to maneuver in the northernmost part of the Aegean Sea.

This is because this area is a small area for carriers to maneuver due to the large number of islands and the high movement of merchant ships.

The Aegean Sea is the part of the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Turkey, connected to the Black Sea by the sea south of Ukraine via the Turkish Bosphorus.

The official said the U.S. Navy could send more fighters to the Black Sea to reconnaissance if the situation in Ukraine worsens.

In particular, if a Russian warship intends to sail into the Turkish Strait, and Turkey requests assistance from NATO, there is a possibility that carrier-based aircraft will conduct reconnaissance in the Black Sea and the Dardanelles.

Turkey said on the 28th of last month that it was unacceptable to a Russian invasion and that it would exercise control over foreign warships entering the Black Sea to prevent the situation from worsening.

The Montreux Agreement allows Turkey to bar foreign warships from passing through the Dardanelles and Bosphorus in wartime, and Ukraine has asked Turkey to implement the agreement to prevent Russian warships from approaching the Black Sea.

According to CNN, in addition to the Truman, the US cruiser San Jacinto is in the northern Aegean Sea, while another five US warships and a Norwegian surface battleship are stationed in the southern Aegean Sea.
