  At the critical moment of the prevention and control of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, listening to General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech twice at close range gave Roger, a deputy to the National People's Congress, who has been a doctor for more than 30 years, a deeper understanding of "life comes first".

  The first time was on May 24, 2020, in the East Hall of the Great Hall of the People, the deliberation site of the Hubei delegation of the third session of the 13th National People's Congress.

  "I saw you on TV."

  As soon as the representative Luo Jie from Taihe Hospital in Shiyan City, Hubei Province spoke, General Secretary Xi Jinping recognized him.

  After the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia, Luo Jie was ordered to serve as the leader of the Shiyan City treatment expert team.

When he came to Beijing to attend the National People's Congress, Roger's "representative channel" before the opening of the conference told the story of treating an 87-year-old man with all his strength on the front line of the fight against the epidemic.

  "What is the supremacy of the people? There are so many people surrounding a patient, which truly reflects what it takes to do whatever it takes." General Secretary Xi Jinping specifically mentioned the matter mentioned by Roger during the deliberation of the Inner Mongolia delegation.

  At the deliberation site of the Hubei delegation, Roger put forward suggestions for strengthening the construction of the grass-roots medical and health system in combination with the front-line anti-epidemic experience.

The general secretary listened carefully and interjected from time to time to ask—

  "How many confirmed cases are there in Shiyan this time?"

  "What is the fatality rate?"

  "How many medical staff do you have in infectious diseases in your hospital?"

  ...

  The general secretary not only asked specific questions, but also gave important instructions such as "weaving a strong and dense public health protection net", which made Roger realize that the "life first" proposed by the general secretary is not only a concept but also an action.

  That day, Roger wrote down two pages of notes.

He also wrote such a paragraph: The general secretary puts the life and health of the people in the highest position.

Our grassroots medical workers must implement "life first" into every life-saving process.

  Once again, I listened to the important speech of the General Secretary closely at the scene of the National Commendation Conference for Fighting the New Coronary Pneumonia Epidemic in September of that year.

  "In the face of protecting people's lives, we must do whatever it takes, and we can do whatever it takes";

  "In order to protect people's lives, we can do anything";

  ...

  On the stage, the general secretary profoundly explained that the people are supreme and life is supreme; off the stage, Roger's eyes were wet.

  He remembered the important juncture of the battle to defend Hubei and Wuhan against the epidemic. General Secretary Xi Jinping went to Wuhan, Hubei to inspect the epidemic prevention and control work; he remembered the scenes of people all over the country helping Hubei through thick and thin; he remembered that the medical staff went all out to treat and did not give up A little hope...

  "To implement the important instructions of the general secretary, we are to put the people first and life first as the most important insistence." Roger said.

  In May 2021, a 7-day-old newborn was sent to Taihe Hospital, where Roger was staying.

  After consultation, the cause was multiple organ failure caused by coxsackie virus, and the implementation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy was the only hope for the boy's survival.

  The hospital set up a multidisciplinary medical and nursing team, and the medical staff guarded it day and night. After 140 hours of rescue, the patient turned to safety.

  Looking back on the treatment process, Roger said: "At that time, I remembered what the general secretary said 'life is the first', and we must do everything possible to save it."

  Roger, who has been a doctor for more than 30 years, has participated in the treatment of public emergencies such as the fight against SARS and the Wenchuan earthquake.

  The 2022 National Two Sessions will be held soon.

Before leaving for Beijing, Roger learned about the recent situation of the newborn who was treated in the hospital last year. "He is recovering very well and is very healthy."
