There has been great turbulence within IF-Metall's union activities at SSAB in Luleå after New Year's since Ulf Karlström, active in the Sweden Democrats, was elected group chairman of the pig iron department.

"A little Eastern state shapes"

IF Metall's federal board then decided to dismiss him because the union did not consider it compatible with the union values to be active in SD.

And in the future, he is not considered eligible for any union assignments.

- I will leave IF Metall after almost 35 years, if we can not ensure that the old club board and chairman are forced to resign.

It is a bit of an Eastern state to say that you are welcome to work as a union, as long as you belong to the right colors.

I have soured on it, said Ulf Karlström before the nomination meeting.

Challenger backed out

But that did not happen.

Those who would challenge the club board as nominees backed out at the last minute.

The only exception is Ilkka Isaksson, who has agreed to be nominated against the trade union base Tomas Karlsson.

- I do not want to comment on it anymore, says a disappointed Ulf Karlström after the nomination meeting.

Remains - surprised

So now it looks as if the union base and the entire club board can remain - despite all the turbulence.

- None of us see this as an employment, but we are elected by the members.

I had expected counter-nominations in all places, but that did not happen and it actually surprised me, says Tomas Karlsson.

Awaiting the annual meeting

- But I think you should have great respect for the assignment in the club board, it is very hard work to be in these positions as well.

We have to wait and see what happens at the annual meeting, says Tomas Karlsson.

IF Metall at SSAB in Luleå has its annual meeting on 23 March.
