This Saturday, the Greek Ministry of Maritime Transport announced that it had seized more than seven million contraband cigarettes destined for the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The cigarettes were discovered in the port of Igoumenitsa (west), in a refrigerated truck, hidden behind thousands of yoghurts, and the driver of the truck, aged 64 and whose nationality was not specified, was stopped.

The ministry clarified that the cigarettes were, “according to the information available to us at this time, destined for the illegal cigarette market in various European countries and Great Britain”.

This smuggling would have represented a loss of taxes for these countries totaling more than one and a half million euros.
