Why will there be more risk of suicide in Ukraine? Because war is a harrowing, traumatic and stressful experience that generates more vulnerability due to the feeling of danger, terror and helplessness.

War increases the risk of mental illness.

It increases risk factors for suicidal behavior and eliminates protective factors. How does it do so in one and the other? Risk factors: scientific literature tells us that in times of war and post-war, psychological disorders, for example depression, increase 37%, anxiety 66% or post-traumatic stress 33%.

Depression, insomnia, drug use are on the rise... If in times of peace these types of psychological disorders affect one in 14 people, in times of war they affect one in three.

Then there are social factors like migration,

forced separations, bereavements or loss of home and employment.

We know that a 1% rise in unemployment implies a 0.8% rise in suicidal behaviour.

And, finally, moral damage, that is, humiliation, loss of freedom and the meaning of life.

Protection factors that disappear: health, educational, social infrastructures... People are disintegrating socially. I asked him about the suicide in Ukraine.

But what about Russia? This conflict can impact Russians living on the borders and those who are against the invasion.

The worldwide isolation of Russia is going to generate unemployment and economic precariousness as well.

But the Russian social structures are going to protect more than the Ukrainian ones because they are not going to be destroyed.

What is statistically known about suicide in war and post-war? The main affected population, but not the only one, are refugees.

The prevalence of suicidal ideation is 16% and suicide attempts 6%.

If the forecasts for the war in Ukraine are 5 million displaced, what can be expected, in the long run, is that 800,000 people will think about suicide and 200,000 will attempt it. And among the commanders and soldiers? 20% risk of suicide.

Data from 2017 in Ukraine, where there had already been several years of armed conflict with Russia, speak of a rate of 24.3 suicides for every 1,000 combatants.

The Military Prosecutor's Office puts it at 554 suicides since 2017 and other unofficial military sources put them at more than 1,000.

Boston University has concluded that since 9/11 there have been 7.

053 American deaths from combat and 30,177 from suicide.

In Afghanistan alone, 259 died in combat and 349 by suicide.

Suicide kills more than war. What suicide figures does the civilian population of Ukraine have in peacetime? Ukraine ranks 13th in the world ranking.

If the world average is 9.5 per 100,000 inhabitants, Ukraine has 21.1.

Suicide accounts for 1.1% of all deaths in Ukraine, 25 a day.

In Spain there are 11. 80% of Ukrainians with severe mental disorders have not had treatment in the last year.

One third of the population lives in poverty.

Suicide is no longer penalized in Ukraine, although its inducement is.

But the heavily influential Orthodox Church continues to condemn him.

How does that impact suicide? Generating a stigma and social rejection.

The Ukrainian church denies farewell rituals, prohibits the existence of priests... In short, it delegitimizes and condemns the decision to commit suicide. In a war, a certain habituation to death ends up taking place.

Can that cause more suicides? Yes.

It is what we know as the acquired capacity for suicide.

There is less fear of death and increased tolerance for suffering and pain.

In a war there are more episodes of violence, abuse, rape, corpses, mutilations... People become depersonalized.

War dehumanizes, strips you of what identifies you as a human being.

And it is easier to attack a thing than a person.

If that works for injuring a third party, it also works for self-harm.

That is, more risk of suicide. In a Twitter thread on this subject, you also point out the loss of dignity.

What do you mean? Moral damage.

It is an unjust invasion that threatens social and individual resistance and resilience.

When the status of peace is threatened, people are denigrated, subjected to humiliation and derision.

And that increases the suffering.

Therefore, it is one more risk factor for suicide.

Which groups are most at risk of suicide in this crisis? Forced migrants, combatants, direct victims of abuse and violence, ethnic or religious minorities, the physically and mentally ill...

The other day in one of the Ukrainian cities only one pharmacy was open.

Men aged 45 to 66 are a risk population in themselves, but now they will lose their jobs and go into combat.

And, of course, childhood and adolescence is a risk group because war cancels childhood. In a war and an exodus, the gender component is also very important.

Those who suffer abuse and rape are women...Of course.

And also boys and girls.

Suicide does not come from a single cause, but if you have been raped and there are no subsequent support networks, that traumatic event adds exponentially to other risk factors. What should the world do to protect Ukrainians from suicide? ?The displaced are going to depend on the welcome they are given.

Specific reception plans must be made, avoiding massive refugee camps, which cause double victimization.

Integration is essential to prevent.

But not only states.

People too.

Support the Ukrainian colonies, maintain telephone contact, help with food, clothing... We can all prevent.
