The enigmatic writer Clarice Lispector spent most of her life in Brazil and it is not for nothing that she is considered
one of the greatest exponents of the literature of that country in the 20th century.
However, her story goes back to a territory that unfortunately has not stopped grabbing headlines in recent days.
Lispector was born in the Ukraine in 1920, specifically in the town of Chechelnik.
A book about her life by Benjamin Moser,
Why This World, a biography of Clarice Lispector
(Siruela), shed light on the lesser-known story of the author of The Apple in the Dark.
His life story revolves around pursuit and flight.
His house was razed after the Bolshevik Revolution and his town was invaded.
Her grandfather was murdered and her mother was raped by Russian soldiers who gave her syphilis.
Chaya's mother, as she was initially christened Clarice, already had two daughters.
In fact, the birth of the writer was produced by the belief that her birth could free her mother from venereal disease.
Clarice was the daughter of Jews, Pinkhas and Mania Lispector, who settled in Brazil in 1922 after passing through Moldavia and Romania.
Upon arriving in Brazil, they all took Portuguese names: Pinkhas was Pedro, Mania, Marieta, and Chaya was given the name Clarice.
In 1925 they moved to Recife (Pernambuco) and Clarice lost her mother in 1930, when she was ten years old.
She somehow carried the guilt of not having saved her with her birth
as popular beliefs said, a feeling that she also reflected in her writing.
She always wanted to dedicate herself to that profession because of a "desire to write".
Her father barely managed to support the family but insisted that Clarice study and so they went to Rio de Janeiro, where she entered the Faculty of Law.
She graduated in a career that was not vocational, so
she lavished herself in the newsrooms of Brazilian newspapers
in search of an opportunity.
Her hypnotic beauty and her great gifts as a writer allowed her to collaborate in magazines and other publications.
She worked as a journalist and at the age of 21 she published Close to the Wild Heart, a work for which she received the Graça Aranha award for best novel.

In 1943 she married the diplomat Maury Gurgel Valente whom she accompanied on his travels until they separated in 1959. Two sons, Pedro and Paulo, were born as a result of this relationship.
The marriage helped him to have economic relief and to be able to dedicate himself to writing.
She acted as the perfect wife until she returned to Rio de Janeiro to collaborate again in newspapers such as
Jornal do Brasil
and thus live independently.
Some of her works are
The besieged city,
Family ties
and
The passion according to GH,
considered her masterpiece.
His writing has always been called an unclassifiable style,
although he outlined costumbrista scenes, especially in his stories and also in newspapers, where his dog Ulisses used to appear.
"Deep down, Ana had always needed to feel the firm root of things. And that had given her a home, surprisingly. Through crooked paths she had come to fall into a woman's destiny, with the surprise of fitting into it like if she had invented it. The man she had married was a real man,
the children they had had were real children, "he
writes in
Love.
Clarice died in 1977 at the age of 56 from cancer.
During her life, she had suffered from anxiety, depression and a house fire caused by one of her cigarettes that caused serious burns that almost amputated her right hand.
