• War in Ukraine Josep Borrell: "Not sending weapons to Ukraine would have been an immense hypocrisy and a historic failure"

China stands in profile.

Last Friday, in an interview published in EL MUNDO, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Policy,

Josep Borrell,

indicated that the Asian giant should take a step forward and mediate with Russia to stop the invasion of Ukraine as soon as possible.

"Diplomacy cannot be only European or American,

here Chinese diplomacy has a role to play,"

he said in response to questions from this newspaper.

"Because there is no alternative. We cannot be the mediators, it is obvious.

There is no possible Normandy format.

And it cannot be the US: who else? It must be China, I trust it," he added.

Beijing's response has arrived this weekend.

In a statement issued by China's office to the EU, a spokesperson assures that they are aware of Borrell's words, but avoid speaking directly.

They do not rule out mediation, but they do not give any indication that they intend to do so or are considering it.

They ask to attend to the requests of the United Nations,

"respect the territorial integrity

and sovereignty of Ukraine" and are concerned about "the safety of civilians."

And although they assure that "China does not want to see an evolution of the Ukrainian issue", they do not give many more clues.

"We are aware of the pertinent information," says the statement about the interview.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine and

hope that the fighting will cease as soon as possible,

the situation on the ground will ease, the safety of civilian life and property will be effectively ensured, and

a large-scale humanitarian crisis will be averted. " The development of the Ukraine issue is something that China does not want to see

.

The Ukraine issue is complicated. China always decides its position and policy according to the merits of the issue itself. We believe that in order to resolve the Ukraine crisis, it is necessary act in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respect and defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries and

seek the peaceful solution of disputes through dialogue,"

says the text.

Call for an end to violence

There is a call for an end to the violence, but with sufficiently ambiguous language so

as not to hold Moscow solely responsible for what is happening

.

"China supports all efforts that lead to de-escalation and political settlement of the situation, and opposes any move that is not good for seeking a diplomatic settlement and adds fuel to the fire," it says, without making it very clear what movements would be

Some in Washington and Brussels consider that it refers to the possibility of acting as a mediator, but others point precisely to an escalation of sanctions and more pressure from the West.

"We encourage Russia and Ukraine to have direct negotiations,"

the Foreign Ministry-backed statement said.

"And we also encourage the US,

engage in a dialogue on an equal footing with Russia,

deal with the frictions and problems accumulated over the years, follow the principle of indivisible security and try to build a balanced, effective and sustainable European security", they add.

The interpretation in the community capital is that

Beijing has no intention of intervening directly,

not yet at least.

The invasion is tarnishing Russia's image, weakening its economy and forcing Moscow to strengthen economic ties, or dependency, with its Asian neighbor.

And the US is distracted.

They think he can take on a bigger role, but they suspect not right away.

Nor is there much less consensus that it is the best way.

Diplomatic sources point out that the idea of mediation is defended by Borrell, but it is not the position of the entire EU.

"Neither have we asked for it nor have they asked for it, but since it has to be a power and neither the US nor Europe can be, China could be," the Spanish politician said in the interview.

The Chinese communication apparatus is taking advantage of the high representative's suggestion to ask that the West and Russia sit down at the table as equals, but also to stress, critically, that the very idea of Beijing mediating reflects nothing more than the inability of the USA, the European Union and NATO to do their own homework.

A symptom of weakness, of weakness.

Chinese diplomacy, in the United Nations, but also in Europe, is moving carefully, without binding, without compromising.

Criticizing the violence and demanding respect for territorial integrity, but also emphasizing that Ukraine should commit to never entering the Atlantic Alliance.

Talking with all parties, but without intervening.
