A terrible road accident caused the death of a 2.5-year-old boy in Saint-Christol-lez-Alès, a town in Gard near Alès.

A driver was driving at high speed when he hit a car driven by a mother with her two children at an intersection.

The youngest died instantly from the violence of the shock.

Her brother, a 17-year-old teenager, is seriously injured, but his life is not in danger.

Opening of a judicial inquiry

The driver tried to flee before being caught about 600 meters further after the intervention of witnesses.

The blood alcohol test came back positive with a rate of 0.46 grams per liter of blood.

The police discovered that he was under the influence of narcotics, driving without a license and without insurance.

He is due to appear in court on Sunday.

A judicial inquiry will be opened on this occasion.
