China News Agency, Taipei, March 6th. A fire broke out in a residential house in Taichung City, Taiwan on the afternoon of the 6th.

According to Taiwan media reports, as of 21:00 that day, the fire had killed 6 people and injured 6 others.

According to reports from Taiwan media such as Central News Agency, Zhongshi News Network, and United News Network, the Taichung City Fire Bureau pointed out that it was reported that afternoon that a fire broke out in a house on Xingzhong Street, Central District, and many people were trapped.

Taichung City Government has dispatched more than 30 fire trucks and more than 120 fire and disaster relief personnel to the scene.

The fire was brought under control at 18:30.

Taichung Mayor Lu Xiuyan said in an interview at 21 o'clock that day, "So far, 6 people are known to have died and 6 to 7 people have been injured and sent to the hospital," and another 29 residents have been placed in hotels.

She said that the Taichung City Government will make every effort to assist the dead and injured in the follow-up matters and resettle the residents.

The building where the fire broke out has 7 floors above ground and 1 floor underground.

Local residents said that the building was formerly a hotel and was later converted into 41 suites for rent.

The building obtained the use license in 1986 and is a qualified building.

However, in 2009, the Taichung City Government found that some residents had built a tin house on the top floor of the building, so it was listed as an "existing illegal construction" building.

It is understood that after a fire broke out in Kaohsiung City Center Tower in October 2021, which killed at least 46 people, the Taiwan authorities required counties and cities to increase public safety declarations for 8- to 15-story condominiums.

However, the old building where the fire broke out on Xingzhong Street in the Central District of Taichung has only 7 floors and was not included in the scope of declaration.
