Tunisian Ministry of Interior thwarts a terrorist attack and arrests a woman

The Tunisian Ministry of Interior said Saturday that security forces thwarted a plan to carry out a "terrorist attack" and arrested a woman on suspicion of being involved in the plan.

The ministry said in a statement that investigators believe that the woman planned to kidnap the children of some members of the security forces and the army in an attempt to force the authorities to release people accused of terrorist attacks.

Investigators also suspect that the woman was also planning to attack a security facility using an explosive belt.

On the other hand, a court specialized in terrorism cases in Tunisia issued verdicts against those accused in the terrorist attack carried out by gunmen loyal to the extremist organization “ISIS” on the city of Ben Guerdane in the south of the country in March 2016.

Verdicts were issued by the criminal department specialized in considering terrorist cases, according to a statement by the liaison office of the Tunis Court, published today, Saturday.

The verdicts came against 96 defendants, 16 of whom were subject to the death penalty, while 15 defendants face prison sentences for the rest of their life.

The rest of the sentences ranged between thirty and four years in prison, while the statement stated that acquittal verdicts were issued to a number of those who were investigated in the case.

The Public Prosecution has appealed all the sentences issued against all the defendants, according to the same source.
