622 kilograms of ivory seized at 5 million dirhams

The General Directorate of Airport Security in Dubai Police announced the seizure of a large quantity of ivory that is prohibited from being traded globally according to the provisions of the CITES agreement, weighing 622 kilograms, and valued at about 5 million dirhams, during the past month.



The administration indicated that all of the quantity was among 5 different seizures revealed by airport security with some travelers transiting from Dubai airports, as they were coming from African countries heading to America and Asia, where the quantity was handed over to the administrative authority represented by the Ministry of Environment and Water in accordance with Federal Law 11 of 2002.



Brigadier General, Acting Director of the General Department of Airport Security, Abdullah Hussain Khan, stressed the importance of the great role played by Dubai Police in combating this phenomenon and its significant and effective contribution to preserving wildlife and environmental balance in various parts of the world, and that Dubai Police is committed to implementing and implementing local and international policies to protect plants. and endangered animals and combating any activity that is contrary to the principles of preserving those species.



He said that Dubai Police personnel have the capacity and training to deal with this type of crime, and that the Dubai Police General Command is keen to cooperate with its partners from the relevant authorities locally and internationally in accordance with the terms of the CITES agreement, which the UAE joined in 1990.



Captain Khaled Mohammed Nour, Acting Director of the Airport Police Department, stressed the Dubai Police's keenness to prevent the illegal trade in elephant ivory and the rest of the materials listed in local and international laws, and to tighten the screws on those traders who violate local and international laws and agreements that prohibit these acts, and we are working to confiscate and hand those seized items. to the competent authorities.



He added that the General Directorate of Airport Security trains and rehabilitates individuals through specialized courses and workshops, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Water, in order to combat the crime of ivory smuggling.



He explained that the department, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Water, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Dubai Airports Corporation, annually organizes several campaigns dedicated to combating the illegal trade in ivory, in the buildings of Dubai International Airports, with the aim of contributing to international efforts to protect elephants from the danger of extinction and educating travelers about the dangers of smuggling ivory or Illicit trafficking in it which will surely lead them to legal prosecution.



Captain Khaled Nour confirmed that there are strict penalties for those who violate the law in the field of ivory smuggling, up to imprisonment or a fine or both, with the confiscation of goods, as well as the penalty for those who do not follow the legal procedures in all shipments subject to the CITES agreement.
