To limit passenger traffic jams in front of the gantries at peak times in the Transilien, the SNCF is experimenting with a new device.

No new technology or major works to be planned, a simple communication campaign could save users precious seconds: the "nudge".

Translatable as "nudge", the aim here is to encourage travelers, daily or occasional, to anticipate the gesture of validation of transport tickets by means of a display giving a countdown before arrival in front of the gates.

An analogy of the Olympics

3… To your tickets… 2… Ready?….1… Validate!

The displays, which depict athletes on the start line, an analogy inspired by the future Paris 2024 Olympic Games, aim to avoid congestion at peak times by saving each user a few seconds when entering and exiting. stations.

An approach that might seem innocuous, yet after having experimented with the device in three "Mass transit" stations, the Gare du Nord, the Gare de Pantin and the Stade de France Saint-Denis station, at the exit of the RER, the agents du Transilien SNCF noted smoother passages at peak times (from 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.) and more than half of them say that travelers are more spread out over the validation gates.

New experiments

So to go further, the “Nudge” installations will be deployed at the Neuilly Porte Maillot station, which welcomes travelers making home-to-work journeys as well as occasional travellers.

The RER line is the most touristic of the lines operated by Transilien SNCF for Île-de-France Mobilités, with many major Parisian and Ile-de-France heritage sites served with 50,000 tourists per day, i.e. 10% of travelers from the entire the line (before health crisis).

Infrared sensors detecting the presence in the area of the validation gates will also be set up at the Stade de France Saint-Denis station to validate the observations of the agents and obtain digital data which will be analysed.
