Russia's offensive against Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhia, has led to condemnation from several world leaders.

When the UN Security Council met on Friday night, Swedish time, the US envoy sharply criticized the attack.

- It was indescribably ruthless and dangerous.

It threatens the security of civilians in Russia, Ukraine and Europe, said Linda Thomas-Greenfield according to TT.

Accused "Ukrainian saboteurs"

Russian forces attacked the nuclear power plant during the night until Friday, and at 01:00 the alarm came that a building in the area was on fire.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the fire started after Russian shelling.

Vasily Nebenzia claims it is a lie that Russian forces caused the fire at the nuclear power plant.

Instead, it must have been Ukrainian "saboteurs" who were behind it, the envoy claimed without presenting any evidence for the claim.

There are two reasons why Russia took over the nuclear power plant, Nebenzia claims: To reduce the risk of "nuclear provocations" from Ukraine and to secure the energy supply for the people of Ukraine.

During his speech, he also compared the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the terrorist group IS and accused them of using civilians as human shields.
