The second Massive jump to the Melilla fence: 1,200 immigrants try to pass armed with hooks and sticks
The first Melilla suffers the largest jump to the fence in its history: 2,500 immigrants
The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, described this Friday as "perfect" the cooperation with Morocco, highlighting the collaboration between the Gendarmerie of this country and the State Security Forces and Bodies to try to stop the successive jumps to the fence Melilla border crossing, which was assaulted by 850 migrants in two days.
In the press conference after the Council of Ministers, Grande-Marlaska denounced the two jumps on the fence recorded on Wednesday and Thursday -as well as a third attempt this Friday-, assuring that they have been "violent attacks" and "unusual ", "something not seen until now", although clarifying that they are "exceptional".
In this sense, the minister highlighted the "significant violence" of the sub-Saharans, recalling that they were equipped with hooks, screws in their shoes and sticks larger than the defenses used by the Civil Guard.
For this reason, Marlaska has shown his solidarity with the fifty wounded agents, praising the work they do on the border.
"In the last few days we have had two assaults with significant violence towards the Melilla fence. Such important assaults in the number of people have never been seen," said the head of the Interior, stressing that these are "European borders ".
"Coordination" with Morocco
The minister recalled the reinforcement of more than a hundred riot police officers from both the Civil Guard and the National Police and, regarding the actions of the Moroccan authorities, pointed out that this country "supports migratory flows" derived from Covid-19.
Despite this, the minister insisted that there is "cooperation and coordination in border control and against mafias that traffic in human beings", pointing out that it is "perfect and adequate".
"Communication is permanent with the Government of Morocco and the Ministry of the Interior, we both work to avoid any similar incident and protect both the Gendarmerie - with agents also injured - and the State Security Forces and Bodies, as well as to guarantee the integrity of our borders," he said.
As proof of this, he said that this same Friday, for the third consecutive day, the joint action of the Moroccan Gendarmerie and the Civil Guard -with the support of the National Police and the Local Police of Melilla- has prevented the jump of another 1,000 migrants distributed in five groups of about 200 people.
In the two previous days there were groups that managed to access the Spanish city.
Attack on police forces
Grande-Marlaska has also pointed out that work is being done on the "improvement" of the border perimeter, after the concertinas were removed to be replaced by other elements such as inverted combs.
The director of the Civil Guard,
María Gámez
, assured this Thursday in Melilla that these replacement works will be completed in the coming weeks.
"In a democratic State we cannot allow borders to be violently attacked, without the State Security Forces and Bodies being violently attacked. This has nothing to do with solidarity with vulnerable groups and people who want a new life but peacefully," he emphasized.
