Pakistani police said that an explosion occurred inside a mosque today, during Friday prayers in the northwestern city of Peshawar, leaving dozens dead and injured.

"We are in an emergency situation and the injured are being taken to hospital," police officer Muhammad Sajjad Khan told Reuters.

Reuters quoted a hospital official as saying that 30 people had died, while the German news agency reported that 60 injured people had been taken to hospital.

The blast occurred in the Kucha Risaldar district of Peshawar, about 190 km west of the capital Islamabad, moments before the start of Friday prayers, witnesses said.

"I saw a man shoot two policemen before entering the mosque, and seconds later, I heard a huge explosion," AFP quoted an eyewitness named Zahid Khan as saying.

This explosion shattered the windows of nearby buildings, and rescuers were seen transporting the dead and wounded from the site.

The motives for this attack are not yet clear.
