In the municipality of La Rochefoucauld-en-Angoumois in the western French department of Charente, an underground cave system was discovered last year during road construction work.

The authorities have now announced that archaeological finds have also been made during investigations of the approximately one kilometer long cave at a depth of 20 meters.

These are human bones, ceramics and a child's footprint.

According to this, the cave was used as a burial place between about 2200 and 800 BC.

Since only a small part of the cave has been archaeologically examined so far, the French Ministry of Culture said that more finds are expected from the remaining parts.

In addition, it is possible to find indications of other forms of use than burial.
