Between travel restrictions, flight cancellations and passenger compensation, the year 2021 has been a difficult period for the aviation sector, one year after the appearance of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Toulouse-Blagnac Airport was not spared since half as many planes circulated there, ie 3.8 million passengers welcomed.

However, disparities appear between the first and second semesters.

Gradual resumption of activities

According to figures published on March 1 by the airport, although the first six months of 2021 have been synonymous with a drop in activity of almost 80% compared to 2019 figures, a clear recovery has been observed. from summer.

Indeed, activity during this period represented 58.3% of that of 2019. Results associated with the improvement of the health situation and the easing of measures in the country.

Despite the introduction of the European health pass on July 1, many Toulouse residents have thus returned to the airport during the summer holidays.

A recovery which "shows how much our customers aspire to travel again", according to Philippe Crébassa, chairman of the management board of Toulouse-Blagnac Airport.

The latter is counting in particular on the opening in the spring of two new airlines to Cyprus and Israel to confirm this recovery.

Limited damage for low cost airlines

In detail, international flights were the most impacted, due to disparities in national health policies, with a drop in activity of nearly 70% compared to pre-Covid figures.

Domestic traffic, which represents nearly two-thirds of Toulouse airport's activity, held up better with a halving compared to 2019. Toulouse-Orly and its one million passengers over the year remains the most attractive line, while in the regions it is Toulouse-Lyon with 190,000 passengers.

Figures which tended to be confirmed in the fourth quarter of 2021.

A notable fact as far as airlines are concerned, the low-cost segment, which provides 44.2% of traffic, has regained and even slightly exceeded its pre-crisis market share, with EasyJet in the lead.
