It was early in the morning when the price for a liter of premium petrol was raised from 1.97 to 2.03 euros at this filling station on Friedberger Landstrasse in Frankfurt, thereby surpassing a mark that brought tears to the eyes of many motorists should have.

The fuel price throughout Germany is currently rushing from record to record, most recently driven by the war in Ukraine.

On Thursday, drivers had to

pay an average of 1.90 euros for a liter of Super E10 in Frankfurt, according to statistics from the internet portal

clever-tanken.de , and a liter of diesel cost 1.91 euros.

That is once again well above the average value that the automobile club ADAC had calculated for the whole of Germany in February, where a liter of diesel was 1.66 euros.

Exactly one year ago, diesel was still available in Frankfurt for around 1.30 euros per liter, which means that the cost of a tank of fuel has risen by almost 50 percent over the past twelve months.

Crude oil prices, which hit their highest level since 2008 on Thursday, are the main reason for the increase.

In view of this development, the ADAC calls for the increase in the commuter allowance to 38 cents, which was decided at the end of February, not to apply until the 21st, as planned, but from the very first kilometer.

The Automobile Club recommends consumers to take advantage of the price fluctuations at the pumps and preferably fill up in the evening hours.

And rightly so: early Thursday evening the price at the Frankfurt gas station was “only” 1.89 euros.
