A few minutes pass after 10 in the morning and the

Apolo Theater

in Barcelona is a bustle.

It is not a usual time, but today (Tuesday) more than 10 workers are struggling because

a New York taxi from the 70s

leaves the stage and gets on a crane that is going to plant it, in a few hours, on

Madrid's Gran Vía

.

Pablo Raya

(Córdoba, 32 years old) and

Andrea Malagón

(Barcelona, 23), two of the

Fame

actors with whom GRAN MADRID has met in Barcelona to witness their trip to our particular Broadway ,

watch the image carefully .

.

Friday is the day set for the first performance in the capital and the vehicle, star of a star scene, is the last element of the props that remained to be

packed

.

«

As soon as the curtain fell, 20 people began to dismount

.

Everything is measured and coordinated so that this does not stop.

On Sunday, the stage and lighting were dismantled and the rest of the props and costumes were sent.

And yesterday the marquee came out, which is already being assembled in Madrid today.

These are days of not sleeping and a lot of stress”, explains José Manuel Simón, the dismantling coordinator, just before Pablo and Andrea enter to say goodbye to those boards that have been their home for more than four months.

"Wow!

It looks like another theater, man»

, he blurts out looking, stunned, at the stage, now completely empty.

Today is moving day and both appear with bulky suitcases, with everything they need for their new destination, which they park for a few minutes to tell us what this march towards what is considered the

third world capital of musicals

means -after New York and London-.

Andrea, who has just received on her cell phone a video of the giant screen in Callao where she is seen promoting the play, cannot hide her emotion.

This

will be her first time in the capital and away from home

.

"I'm a little scared, because I've never worked there and it's my first production.

But I face it with enthusiasm.

I want to eat the Gran Vía!

», expresses the actress, dancer and singer, who has been training for a marathon of years: eight at the

Coco Comín

academy -who directs and choreographs the work-, as many summers in the most important schools in London and more than a thousand days « dancing with the best tap choreographer, Sharon Lavi».

"I knew I was late", she excuses herself before telling that her adolescence was spent

playing professional basketball

- "In the highest leagues", including Barça - and she did not opt for the profession until she was 16 .

His partner in the musical, Pablo, faces the new adventure also excited, although in a different way.

He is one of the veterans and Madrid is his home.

“Coming back is always a success.

It is a super special and iconic place for those of us who dedicate ourselves to this »

, he assures.

His beginnings have nothing to do with it.

Pablo has always had it “very clear”: “When I was little I used to tell my parents: 'Take me to a castiiiing...' -he says, exaggerating his Cordovan accent-.

But they nothing.

So at the age of 18, with the excuse of studying Nursing, I went to Madrid.

The first time I left the Metro in Plaza de España and saw Gran Vía I thought: 'I'm going to conquer this street'.

And look, six months later I was at the Lope de Vega with

High School Musical

», He adds.

At that time he had no training as an actor, but with his natural talents and his skill with the

acrobatic jump rope

- he has competed at a European level - he slipped into that first musical.

Later, he was a Disney boy, he worked on

Mamma Mía

,

Ay Carmela

,

Madagascar

or

Flashdance

, he shot series and movies in Spain, London and New York and created his own production company, Are you ready, which has had to park with the pandemic.

The two are the comedic couple in the play.

He plays Joe Vegas, an off-road and irreverent pimp, and she is Mabel Washington, an enthusiastic young woman, somewhat childish, with the occasional complex for her body.

Roles that, to a certain extent, have to do with them

and that are framed within a script, classic and timeless, with which they also feel identified.

«For me the story of Fama is also my story.

That they accept me, the perseverance of not giving up, the effort...

I have deprived myself of doing castings because of my physique

.

There are still some ideals for certain roles and in my case that fear exists.

And to be caught or not, too, "says Andrea.

Pablo, on the other hand, has been haunted by a phrase from his childhood that is also represented in the play -«

As a child he always said he wanted to be a famous actor

.

And this show teaches us the dark side of fame », says he-he, in addition to other circumstances that he continues to face every day.

«

The work is very therapeutic.

It talks about the limitations that the world of entertainment places on artists

: racism, the body, abilities..., in addition to that other handicap of this profession, that to work you need the approval of a third party », he adds.

Talking to them, time flies.

It's noon and the clock is pressing us.

One last quick look at the theater and we get into the taxi that takes us to Sants station, where

Valeria Jones

(Málaga, 23 years old) and

Joan Martínez (Barcelona, 21) are waiting for us, another part of the

Fama

cast

who, Like Andrea, they are facing their first time in the capital.

Hasty hugs and rush to boarding

.

"In four minutes they close doors," Andrea hurries.

On time we got on board a transport that, in a real and symbolic way, will take them directly to start a career that accumulates, behind, years of effort and, ahead, an excessive illusion.

The road runs between complicit laughter, family calls, the odd photo on Instagram and efforts to solve the

sudoku

to get the key to the house that Andrea and Valeria will share just a few meters from the Gran Vía. There is also time to do a review what they have experienced in recent months and remember the casting in which they

were selected from more than 1,000 applicants

.

"It was very exhaustive, but they focused on our talents and gave opportunities to those who did not have as much resume," says Andrea with the approval of her colleagues.

The

hard tests

to which Coco Comín subjected them to round off the function also give something to talk about.

«

They became almost military

.

It was a physical and mental experience.

Coco is a bit of a sergeant, but it is to be admired [the choreographer is almost 70 years old and is in great shape)]”, narrates Valeria, a dancer in the musical and

cover

of the Metal character -a punk girl who wants to take on the world-, with whom he has broken the racial barrier with his career and talent: he has been dancing since he was four years old, he has trained in Malaga and New York thanks to a scholarship and was a semifinalist on the television program

Fame, to dance

.

«

I have been dreaming of a great theater in Madrid for 20 years

, of being able to be part of this world.

A dream has come true.

Gran Vía is like working on Broadway

.

I feel high », she indicates.

"

It's like a professional goal

," adds Joan, saxophonist and "newcomer to the company," in the same vein.

He has played in a Big Band Jazz and in orchestras and has a funky and hip hop group with which he has recorded an EP.

He has spent four "intense" years training in theater and dance and is nervous because he is about to touch on what he has been fighting for years.

«I have a desire to get there that I'm dying»

, the young man suddenly releases at one point in the interview, who in the EDP will be Goody King, a funny little musician that the actor has taken to his field.

Halfway there, Andrea begins to sing:

«I will survive, I will fight and I will be able to for this dream»

.

It is the song that sounds at the beginning of the musical and that, they tell us, they feel as their own.

And after Valeria gobbles down a sandwich stuffed with Serrano ham and Doritos ("they're all the rage," they say to our disbelief), she pulls a deck of cards out of her mini bag.

«

It is a ritual before the

show

.

Coffee and cards

.

It helps us activate and stay awake », she explains before beating up her opponents.

Already in Atocha, after clenching their fists and teeth, they dance before the curious gaze of some travellers.

Aboard the taxi on Gran Vía, the emotion hardly prevents them from saying a word

.

And in front of the theater, they release a "Claritaaaaa" that leaves all the spectators speechless.

Clarita (Clara Peteiro, Carmen en

Fama

) is the protagonist of the play, and she has gone there to gossip about what is going on.

It is also her first time in the capital.

Between hugs and laughter, they discover their faces on the posters.

And the explosion comes.

"How strong!"

Joan exclaims.

Inside the EDP Gran Vía Theater, where the stage begins to take shape to become the Higher School of Performing Arts in New York, they are amazed.

Tomorrow, at 11, they have their first rehearsal there but they are calm because

behind their backs they carry the 158 performances that have been marked in Barcelona

.

Before, tonight, they will take the opportunity to see

Grease

.

It will be the only day they can do it once they start the frenetic rhythm of the musical.

After an unforgettable trip, we say goodbye to you.

Your dream has already started.

And who knows if, too, his

way to fame

.
