  • The Emeritus King Juan Carlos: "I am looking forward to returning to Spain"

The return of King Juan Carlos I to Spain is one step closer after the Prosecutor's Office of the Supreme Court has filed the procedural proceedings of the father of Felipe VI.

The news has come out 19 months after the former monarch left Spain on a private plane to

Abu Dhabi

, which has become his temporary residence during this time.

The father of Felipe VI knew that there was little chance that the investigations against him could prosper.

The inviolability that he enjoyed until his abdication in 2014 and the three voluntary tax regularizations that he carried out in this time from Abu Dhabi favored this step of closing the proceedings.

In fact, Don Juan Carlos hoped that the State Attorney General, Dolores Delgado, would file the investigation beforehand, but it has been delayed.

According to sources close to the Emeritus, the closure of the proceedings was a key step for the Royal House and the Government to assess the return of Don Juan Carlos to Spain.

Although the official message sent from La Zarzuela is that the King's father

will return "whenever he wants", government sources discharged all responsibility in the Royal House so that it is there where the best time for his return is assessed.

Juan Carlos I has stated on several occasions that he wants to return to, at least, spend seasons in Spain, but it is not yet clear when or how, or if it will be a temporary or permanent return.

The notice

After knowing the decision of the Prosecutor's Office, Juan Carlos I's lawyer,

Javier Sánchez-Junco

, has issued a statement in which he states that "there are no circumstances that allow us to appreciate the existence of any illicit attributable to King Juan Carlos or conduct that be liable to criminal prosecution".

Likewise, the King Emeritus's lawyer says that "next week, the corresponding assessments will be made" on the file and he will communicate "the decisions that Don Juan Carlos may take."
