This is the first time the Security Council has included the Houthis as an entity under the arms embargo sanctions.

  In the vote that day, 11 members of the Security Council voted in favor of Resolution 2624, and 4 members abstained from voting.

  The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions such as asset freezes and travel bans on individuals and entities that threaten Yemen's peace, security and stability and hinder the political transition since 2014, and has since 2015 imposed sanctions on Yemeni leaders, including Houthi leaders An arms embargo is imposed on individuals listed by the Committee.

  Resolution 2624 reaffirmed the previous indefinite arms embargo and decided to extend sanctions such as the asset freeze and travel ban for one year to February 28, 2023; to extend the mandate of the expert panel under the Yemen Sanctions Committee for one year , until March 28, 2023.

  In September 2014, the Houthis seized Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and then occupied southern Yemen.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia led the establishment of a multinational coalition to launch a military operation code-named "Decisive Storm" against the Houthis.

In December 2018, under the mediation of the United Nations, the Yemeni government and the Houthis reached an agreement on a ceasefire and exchange of prisoners of war, but soon the two sides accused each other of breaking the ceasefire agreement.
