Heavy rains continued on Australia's east coast on Tuesday and tens of thousands have been asked to leave their homes.

The state of Queensland's Prime Minister Annastacia Pałaszczuk says that the city of Brisbane has received rain equivalent to 80 percent of an average annual rainfall over the past three days, reports ABC News.

So far, eight people have died in the storms and several thousand have had to be rescued.

About ten people are missing.

The floods in and around Brisbane are the worst since 2011, when the city of millions was hit by floods that were then described as the worst in a century.

About 200 km south, in Lismore in the state of New South Wales, all 43,000 residents were urged to leave their homes immediately on Monday.

On Monday, rescue workers worked hard to rescue people who had taken refuge on the roofs.

Authorities warn that the situation will worsen and in Brisbane alone, almost 11,000 properties are expected to be partially submerged.
