The moment you look up after working at your desk for a long time, brushing your phone, or when you suddenly get up from the sofa for two hours... Are your shoulders and neck heavy and stiff?

This may be your body telling you that there is something wrong with your cervical spine.

Zhang Jianbo, deputy chief physician of the pain department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, said that among the patients recently received, many young people have typical symptoms of cervical spondylosis due to long-term use of computers.

  Do you have cervical spondylosis?

2 ways to self-test

Once you have symptoms such as shoulder and neck pain, noise in neck movement, or even numbness in your fingers, you should consider whether there is a problem with your cervical spine.

Zhang Jianbo recommends two simple and relatively safe and reliable self-examination methods for cervical spondylosis, which requires the cooperation of family members:

The first method (brachial plexus pulling experiment): the family members hold the neck with one hand and the wrist with the other, and pull in the opposite direction.

If I feel pain, numbness and other discomfort, it indicates that I may have cervical spondylosis;

The second method (head pressure test): I sit on a chair, keep my head and neck upright, my family members cover the top of my head with the left palm, make a fist with the right hand, press or hit the back of the left hand, and the hitting force should be Moderate.

If I have symptoms of pain and numbness, it means that I may have had cervical spondylosis.

In addition, if there is muscle soreness in the back of the neck, especially the muscles behind the ears and under the skull, if the pain is obvious after being touched, it indicates that there is a problem with the neck muscles, and you may also have cervical spondylosis.

Zhang Jianbo reminded that the above methods are only for simple self-examination at home. If the pain is serious, you must go to a regular medical institution in time and leave it to a doctor for professional judgment.

Expert advice: 5 strokes to prevent cervical spondylosis

Zhang Jianbo said that cervical spondylosis, in addition to bringing pain and discomfort to people and affecting daily work and study, may also induce a variety of diseases in the whole body: such as visual impairment, abdominal distension and constipation, chest pain, cataplexy, Alzheimer’s disease, and high blood pressure. Dislocation of the cervical spine occurs, the cervical spine bleeds to form a hematoma, and it may even compress the spine and cause paralysis.

Try these five tips to prevent cervical spondylosis:

  1. Avoid holding the neck in one position for a long time. When holding a position for about 1 hour, you should take a proper rest and exercise, and continue to work after the neck is relieved from fatigue.

  2. Scientifically choose pillows, 8cm-14cm is more suitable, avoid too high or too low, when lying on the back, the pillow is the same height as my fist, when lying on the side, the height of the pillow is roughly the same as the length of the shoulder width.

It is best to choose a pillow with a low middle and high sides. The pillow core should also be filled with soft and breathable fillings such as buckwheat husk, duck down, mung bean shell, etc.

  3. Keep your neck warm.

In summer, pay attention to avoid air conditioners, fans, etc. blowing directly on the neck. In winter, pay attention to adding scarves and other items to keep warm.

When the neck temperature is too low and the blood flow is not smooth, it is easy to cause cervical spondylosis.

  4. Strengthen neck muscles.

Swimming, playing badminton, table tennis, etc. are good ways to exercise neck muscles.

You can use the head and neck as a pen to write the word "米" every day, 10 at a time, several times a day.

  5. Prevent acute injury to the head and neck, avoid sleeping in the car, and find a fulcrum to rely on if you sleep to prevent neck injury caused by sudden braking.

When working, pay attention to prevent neck contusion caused by working for too long or overloading.
