• Swimming lessons have been regularly canceled for three months in Nantes swimming pools.

  • Disturbances linked to an ongoing strike movement among lifeguards.

The members again found doors closed.

As regularly since November, swimming lessons were canceled Monday evening at the Gloriette swimming pool, in downtown Nantes.

The reason: a strike by lifeguards which disrupts the operation of swimming pools, in particular during club training times, during which the presence of one of these municipal agents is essential.

“We have already lost a hundred sessions at Léo-Lagrange and twenty at Jules-Verne, laments Alain Nail, the president of the ASPTT.

It creates irritation among members, warned at the last minute.

They find it difficult to understand.

For more than three months, the fifty Nantes lifeguards have been mobilizing against the famous reform of the working hours of territorial agents, which came into force on January 1.

But the discussions still seem to be at a standstill with the town hall, even after the last meeting which was held on Friday.

“Before, we had recoveries for Sundays and public holidays worked, but the reform takes them away from us, explains Olivier Fontaine, South delegate for local authorities 44. We are therefore asking for financial compensation, at least 50 euros per Sunday worked.

The town hall does not make the effort to listen to our proposals, so the strike will continue.

“New disruptions are therefore to be expected, and could also affect school time or even the time slots reserved for the general public.

An already complicated period for swimming clubs

In the meantime, the clubs are doing their accounts and fear that they will still have to put their hands in their pockets, after two complicated years due to the health crisis.

“We have already lost 30% of our members and spent around 160,000 euros in reimbursements, calculates Alain Nail.

Fortunately, the budget will be less this year if we have to reimburse the sessions lost due to the strike.

But it will weigh on future investments, such as the purchase of equipment.

“Very aware of the inconvenience caused”, the town hall specifies that “a salary maintenance allowance has been proposed so that [the lifeguards] do not lose money on their payslip”.

A new working group is scheduled for Wednesday.
