• The number of criminal cases in the jurisdiction of Nantes increased by 10% compared to 2019.

  • The figures for domestic violence are particularly worrying.

  • The fight against drug trafficking is also a priority action.

A month after the State's announcement of an "overall drop in crime figures" in Loire-Atlantique, the Nantes court's 2021 criminal activity report, unveiled on Monday, brings a more nuanced reading.

The number of new criminal cases presented by the Nantes public prosecutor's office has thus increased by 18% between 2021 and 2020, and by 10% compared to 2019, a year nevertheless "particularly busy with regard to delinquency", specifies the public prosecutor. .

This growth, which reflects the "work of justice" and the "mobilization of the police and gendarmerie services", is explained by an increase in certain acts committed, in particular two scourges known on the territory of Nantes: drug trafficking and domestic violence.

“Domestic violence increases every year.

In just five years, the increase is 45%.

It's considerable, ”says Renaud Gaudeul, prosecutor.

The latter says he is “totally committed to this fight”.

He cites the examples of anti-reconciliation bracelets, a new device put in place in January 2021 to “better protect victims”, which have already been implemented 22 times in the jurisdiction.

Some 35 units of Telephone grave danger, offered since 2015 to battered women, are also currently allocated, against "17 last summer".

Renaud Gaudeul also mentions the monthly meetings of a steering committee bringing together all the services and associations for the response to the “most complicated cases”.

He also announces the "creation in progress" of a "family center" composed of five specialized magistrates within the Nantes prosecutor's office.

“We need specialized magistrates and lawyers who are perfectly familiar with the mechanisms to refine our criminal response”, justifies the prosecutor.

“Nantes is not in a more unfavorable situation”

Regarding the fight against narcotics, Renaud Gaudeul confirms that the new strategy is to tackle more intermediate deal points.

“We have been putting the package on this since the summer.

Obviously, we're embarrassing them.

If we didn't do this, the traffic would continue to take on greater proportions.

Now, we have to see in the longer term if we manage to stop the phenomenon.

The prosecution has also multiplied the criminal fixed fines [200 euros] aimed at drug users.

“There needs to be consumer awareness,” he insists.

More generally, the public prosecutor, who wishes to develop appearances on prior recognition of guilt (without trial) and alternative sentences to prosecution, considers that there is a "very strong deterioration in delinquency in the city center of Nantes in recent years, the numbers show it”.

“But compared to other cities, Nantes is not in a more unfavorable situation, believes Renaud Gaudeul.

Perhaps also that we were starting from a more favorable situation here.

It is this change which gives a feeling of insecurity, which is real.

In other cities, you experience this delinquency less when you are in certain favored neighborhoods.

In Nantes, there is more diversity.

This fosters this feeling of insecurity.
