At 4.30pm on Tuesday, information came in of an attack on the TV tower in Kyiv.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia is behind.

Russian occupation forces fired on a TV tower in Kyiv.

As a result of the shelling, hardware was damaged.

Channel broadcasts will be temporarily unavailable, "writes the Ukrainian State Department of Special Communications and Information Protection.

Pictures show how a building next to the TV tower is smoking heavily.

According to journalists on site from the news agency AFP, the tower still stands.

Preparation for an attack

According to Jörgen Elfving, former lieutenant colonel, a Russian attack on the TV tower may be part of the preparations for a major attack on Kyiv.

He says he is surprised that it has not happened before.

- You do not want pictures to come out when you are pushing Kyiv to pieces, says Jörgen Elfving.

"Fight against press freedom"

Technical equipment has been destroyed and the Ukrainian Interior Ministry states that "the channels will not work for a while".

A reserve system must be put into use as soon as possible in order to be able to resume transmissions.

According to Erik Halkjaer, a journalist at Reporters Without Borders, the attack on the TV tower is a blow to press freedom and makes it more difficult to take part in news in the country.

- The TV media are the big ones, they are the ones that the majority of the population assimilates.

You thus silence the media that reach the farthest in the countryside and in the cities in Ukraine and you have to turn to radio and the internet, says Erik Halkjaer.

Five people have died in the incident, Ukrainian authorities say.
