In recent years, the right of veto has been increasingly criticized, not least by Sweden, France and Germany.

- The USA and Russia lead the league by using their veto.

This is because they have spheres of interest, so they support different parties in different conflicts, says Katinka Svanberg, senior lecturer in international law at Stockholm University.

Russia's veto paralyzes peace efforts

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the UN Security Council has met four times - but without success.

A draft resolution was drafted condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine and calling on the country to withdraw its troops.

However, Russia used its veto.

Thus, all possible resolutions have been paralyzed that would make a resolution of the conflict binding on all parties.

Recurring criticism

The veto power of the great powers in the Security Council, the UN's main body, has often been used in crisis situations and has paralyzed the Security Council's main task: peacekeeping.

This is also the opinion of Pål Wrange, professor of international law and director of the Stockholm Center for International Law and Justice.

- The right of veto gives the great powers an incentive to remain in the UN and maintains a balance between, above all, the United States and Russia.

On the other hand, in situations like this, the UN appears paralyzed, which reduces its credibility and legitimacy.
