Just before 08 o'clock on Monday morning, the rescue service and ambulance were alerted to an apartment building on Gärdesvägen in Leksand.
There was a fire in an apartment on the second floor and there was a risk that the flames would spread to adjacent apartments and up in the attic.
- It has been a fully developed fire, the stairwell was full of smoke when we got there and flames erupted from the balcony and threatened to spread up in the attic, says Anders Svedlund, officer on duty, rescue region Bergslagen.
Three people have been taken to hospital by ambulance but there is no information on how seriously injured they are.
- The whole house has been evacuated and Leksandsbostäder has opened a room nearby where residents can be taken care of.
There will be some smoke damage in adjacent apartments that must now be cleaned up.
The rescue service in Leksand received reinforcements from Rättvik and Gagnef and at 9.15 it was expected that the operation would last for a few more hours.
