The General Assembly will hold a special session today to discuss a draft resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine

The UN Security Council called on the UN General Assembly to convene an emergency session to discuss a draft resolution condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The General Assembly has 193 member states.

In the wake of Russia, the permanent member of the Security Council, resorting last week to veto the draft resolution in the council, the Western powers hope for a broad condemnation of the Russian aggression against Ukraine during the General Assembly session scheduled for today, Monday.

The five permanent members of the Security Council also include the United States, France, Britain and China.

During the urgent session, the fourth in a week, of the Security Council, 11 of the 15 council members voted in favor of referring the draft resolution to the General Assembly.

Russia voted against the resolution, but it does not have a veto over the procedural vote on the public Friday.

"Russia cannot prevent the world from uniting to condemn its invasion of Ukraine," said Britain's ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward.

It is expected that deliberations on the draft resolution within the General Assembly will take several days, as representatives of several countries are expected to speak during the debate.

It is noteworthy that this will be the emergency special session No. 11 of the General Assembly in seven decades.

The vote on the draft resolution aims to bypass the number of votes that considered the referendum, which Russia conducted on the annexation of Crimea to the country in 2014, was invalid.

100 member states voted in favor of the draft resolution at the time, 11 rejected it and 58 abstained.

Russia forcibly annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

The current draft resolution, which was seen by the German News Agency (dpa), condemns the Russian aggression against Ukraine "in the strongest terms" and affirms Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and unity.

The draft resolution also calls on Russia to immediately withdraw from Ukrainian territory and return to commitment to the Minsk Agreement.

According to diplomatic sources, the draft resolution will undergo some amendments in order to vote on it in the General Assembly.

It is noteworthy that the resolutions of the UN Security Council are legally binding, while the decisions of the General Assembly are not, but they are seen as having symbolic importance.
