• After the publication of a video on social networks, the diocese of Bordeaux confirms that a priest was spat on by a man after Sunday mass.

  • The incident occurred on the forecourt of the Saint-Michel basilica during a blessing in the middle of street vendors.

  • The priest has decided not to file a complaint, so the diocese reaffirms "its desire to cultivate a climate of peace and fraternity in this district, in close collaboration with the municipality, associations and the forces of order".

It's a video of only a few seconds.

But since Monday morning, it has been increasingly taken up on social networks, in particular by members of the National Rally or those of Eric Zemmour's movement, Reconquest, such as Gilbert Collard.

On this one, we can see a tall man approaching as close as possible to a priest on the forecourt of the Saint-Michel basilica in Bordeaux… and spit on him!

Insults would also have flared up.

In #Bordeaux, a man spits on the priest in front of the Saint-Michel church while he was blessing the square: the multiplication of #christianophobic acts, this is also the France of #Macron!

This Monday noon, the diocese confirms the facts through a press release.

The incident occurred at the end of Sunday Mass in a particular and sometimes tense context.

Indeed, the forecourt of the building is regularly stormed by street vendors from the Place Saint-Michel, as the images show, due to the work around the Arrow of the same name.

This Sunday, the municipal police intervened for the first time according to the diocese around 11 a.m. to dislodge the sellers.

But the latter very quickly resumed their places after the departure of the police.

The priest will not file a complaint

The priest then "came out accompanied by an altar server to open the passage while blessing those present" and "the exit was generally calm" until the moment when "an individual spat on the priest”, explains the diocese in its press release.

On the video, we do not see clearly if the spit ends its course on the masked face of the man of the Church, on his clothes or if he passes by.

The attacker continued on his way without stopping in the middle of the crowd while the priest turned to him taken aback before continuing his blessing.

The diocese specifies that the priest who received the spit does not wish to file a complaint.

He also reaffirms "his desire to cultivate a climate of peace and fraternity in this Saint-Michel district, in close collaboration with the municipality, associations and the police".

the town hall adds for its part to be aware of this anarchic installation of street vendors in the square and to multiply the interventions with its municipal police.
