Pupils from primary and middle school in Arvidsjaur have previously during school time been allowed to participate in the culture school's music lessons.

Now, on the other hand, a long tradition has been broken when music teaching, since the beginning of the school year, may only be conducted outside the school day.

- The cultural school in Arvidsjaur municipality has just over 60 music students in primary and middle school.

A student has dropped out of music lessons.

Several parents say that their children are considering quitting, and it feels very sad, says Ing-Marie Olavi, music teacher at Arvidsjaur's cultural school.

Not in accordance with the Education Act

That a student is regularly allowed to drop out of regular teaching to participate in a leisure activity is not compatible with the provisions of the Education Act, according to Ola Sonidsson, head of school in Arvidsjaur municipality.

 - We follow the Education Act and have many governing documents to relate to.

The cultural school's music lessons may be conducted in direct connection with the end of the school day.

The consequence of this will be that the principals will find it easier to lead their activities and we will have better school results, he says.

"Music increases mental well-being"

Music teacher Ing-Marie Olavi does not agree that school results would be worse because students spend 20 minutes a week on music.

- The music makes you more motivated and it becomes easier to keep up with the teaching.

Today, many children suffer from mental illness and the music increases mental well-being, she says.

Why have students previously been able to participate in the cultural school's music lessons during school hours?

- I can not answer what previous school principals have made for decisions, says school principal Ola Sonidsson to SVT.

In the clip, Ola Sonidsson talks about why music teaching is arranged after school - and Ing-Marie Olavi about the importance of music in Arvidsjaur.
