Mali: several parties shaken by internal struggles

In Mali, in Principle it is this Monday that presidential and legislative elections were to be held.

These polls were to mark the end of the 18-month transition validated by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after the first coup in August 2020 which overthrew former President IBK .

But in the meantime, there was a second coup in May 2021. And at a time when there is still no real visibility on the new transition, several political parties are torn apart.

Within the former presidential majority the tone is rising.

The heirs of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, overthrown in August 2020 before dying last month, are torn apart… Two camps are now openly clashing within the Rassemblement pour le Mali (RPM).

Bone of discord?

The designation for some, election for others of the current party leader,

as candidate for the next presidential election.

Presidential election whose date is not known.

Wind up, Me Baber Gano, secretary general of the RPM and his supporters contest this choice and file a complaint in court.

The climate is rather deleterious…

Another shock, this time within Adema, the Alliance for Democracy in Mali (Adema), also a member of the former presidential majority and an alliance of parties for the success of the transition.

Internally, Adema decided to support the idea of ​​a transition lasting one year, but its representatives within the National Transition Council voted for a transition ranging from six months to five years.

Again problem...

In the camp opposite, the heavyweight is the Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD) ​​party of the late Soumaïla Cissé;

the party now has two leaders vying for the chair…
