European Union: We will not engage in nuclear escalation because of Russia

The European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday the bloc would not engage in an escalation after Russian President Vladimir Putin put Russia's nuclear deterrent forces on high alert yesterday.

"We will not continue with this escalation," Borrell told BBC Radio 4's station.

On Sunday, the European Union announced that it had put its nuclear deterrent system on high alert, in response to Moscow's announcement to put the nuclear deterrent forces on high alert.

"It is very important to stress that Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered that the Russian nuclear deterrent system be put on high alert," said Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy representative.

"Our nuclear deterrence system is on high alert as we witness a war on European borders," he added at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
