The Anonymous collective, made up of activists and "hackers" and known until now for their actions for freedom of expression and cyber attacks against governments and corporations, has declared "cyber war" on Vladimir Putin.
Anonymous began an escalation in its "cyberguerrilla" on Monday, with
attacks on the official portals of TASS, Fontanka and Kommersant
, where it even inserted a message addressed to the Russian population: "Dear citizens, we ask you to stop this madness: do not send your sons and husbands to certain death. Putin has lied to us and put us in danger. We are cut off from the world. They have stopped buying our gas and oil. In a few years we will live like North Korea."
Half an hour after the announcement on Twitter, they boasted that they had achieved their first victory: the temporary "crash" of the RT (formerly known as Russia Today) television network and Internet portal.
The action of Anonymous - whose members appear in public with the
Guy Fawkes
mask - occurs in the midst of intense debate in the United Kingdom, with the request for the closure of the chain based in the British Isles and considered as part of the propaganda of the Kremlin.
Anonymous's announcement was received positively on the networks with demonstrations of support and incitements to take the "cyber war" against Moscow even further:
"Now, empty your finances!".
The group's counterattack comes in response to Russia's offensive with DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks on PrivatBank, Oschad bank and the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense in anticipation of the invasion.
Russian hackers may have used a "wiper" virus
, capable of paralyzing web portals and rendering computer drives inoperative, according to the Slovak cybersecurity company ESET Research.
The malware may have already jumped to Ukrainian government contractors in Latvia and Lithuania.
Financial institutions in the EU and the UK have alerted companies and banks to strengthen their defenses in
fear of a "cyber war" on a massive scale.
The actions of Anonymous can be considered as a cyber "guerrilla" against Russia, although its members have been persecuted and arrested in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain or Turkey.
In their almost two decades of existence, they have carried out, among others, actions defending
Julian Assange
and "cyber attacks" against the Islamic State, the Ku Klux Klan,
Elon Musk
or the Church of Scientology.
