WHO warns: Ukraine's oxygen supply is approaching a "dangerous point"

The World Health Organization has warned of a serious shortage of oxygen supply in Ukrainian hospitals.

"The situation of the oxygen supply is approaching a very dangerous point in Ukraine. Trucks are unable to transport oxygen supplies from factories to hospitals across the country, including in the capital, Kiev," a statement by the World Health Organization said on Sunday.

The statement continued, "The majority of hospitals could run out of oxygen within the next 24 hours. Some of the reserves have already run out. This poses a threat to the lives of thousands of people."

Hospitals need oxygen to treat people with large numbers of diseases, including Covid-19.

The World Health Organization said the war had increased demand in Ukraine by as much as 25 percent.

"It is essential to ensure that life-saving medical supplies - including oxygen - reach those who need them," the organization stressed.
