The European Union closes its airspace to Russian aircraft

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union was closing its airspace to Russian-owned, controlled or Russian-registered aircraft, "including those of the wealthy".

"They will not be able to land, take off or fly over EU territory, including the private jets of the wealthy," she said on Twitter.

The European Union countries have unilaterally announced a ban on Russian aircraft in their airspace in the past few days.

Britain also imposed a ban on Russian airlines from landing at its airports or crossing its airspace.

Von der Leyen praised the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the face of the Russian attack, saying that "his courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people have been an inspiration to all of us."
