German Chancellor
Olaf Scholz
today announced a one-time extraordinary allocation of 100 billion euros to equip the German armed forces and the annual investment of more than two percent of gross domestic product in defense.
In a speech before the Bundestag (lower house) in the framework of an extraordinary session to analyze the situation around Ukraine after the Russian invasion, Scholz underlined the need to have an "efficient, state-of-the-art and advanced" Army to protect to the country, among other threats, from the one represented
by Vladimir Putin's
Russia .
Scholz warned Putin against underestimating the determination of the West, while referring to the "great challenge" of preventing the war waged by the Kremlin chief in Ukraine
from spreading to other countries in Europe.
"We stick to our duty of assistance in NATO without any buts. I have also said this to our allies in Central and Eastern Europe who fear for their safety. Putin should not underestimate our determination to defend together with our allies every square meter of territory of the Alliance," he stated before the Bundestag (lower house)
Yesterday, the government announced that Germany will deliver
1,000 anti-tank rocket launchers and 500
Stinger-type surface-to-air missiles to Ukraine in its aid package against the Russian invasion.
This decision marks a break, given that the German government has prohibited exports of "lethal" equipment to conflict zones since the end of the Second World War (1939-45).
Scholz explained that
"Russian aggression against Ukraine marks a change of era
and threatens the established postwar order."
"In this situation, it is our duty to help, as much as we can, Ukraine against the invading army of Vladimir Putin," he said.
