After Christmas, the number of pregnant women with covid has increased sharply and at the birth in Umeå, some days they have had to turn ordinary maternity wards into isolation rooms.
So-called covid births require extra much as the birth must be kept isolated and the midwives must work with protective equipment on.
- This means that they can not as easily help with normal births, which means that staffing is negatively affected, says Olov Grankvist, operations manager for obstetrics and gynecology in the Västerbotten Region.
No extra resources
But despite the fact that covid births require more, the business has not received any extra resources to handle it.
- We are forced to solve it with the staff we have.
Recently, covid-19 has spread very rapidly in society and it is clearly noticeable at the birth, pregnant women are also a group that has a low vaccination rate, says Olov Grankvist.
