America and "NATO" criticize Putin's threat with Russia's deterrent force on alert

The United States on Sunday accused President Vladimir Putin of "fabricating threats" after he put Russia's nuclear deterrent on alert amid the Ukraine crisis.

"This is a pattern we have seen with President Putin throughout this conflict, which is the fabrication of non-existent threats in order to justify further aggression," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on ABC television when asked about the Moscow announcement.

In turn, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, condemned the Russian president's decision to put the nuclear deterrent force on alert, and considered the move an "unacceptable escalation."

"It means that President Putin continues to escalate this war in a totally unacceptable way," she added in an interview with CBS.

Putin justified his decision by condemning the "aggressive statements of NATO" towards Russia, and criticized the "illegal" economic sanctions imposed by the West on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

For his part, considered the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Sunday that President Vladimir Putin's decision to put the Russian nuclear deterrent force on alert is "irresponsible" behavior.

"This is a dangerous statement. This is irresponsible behaviour," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told CNN.

The Russian deterrent forces are a group of units whose purpose is to deter any attack on Russia, "including in the event of a war involving the use of nuclear weapons," according to the Defense Ministry.

These forces are equipped with missiles, strategic bombers, submarines and ships.

On the defense level, it includes an anti-missile shield, air control systems, and anti-aircraft and anti-satellite defenses.
